Julie Rohrdanz  |  Hunting the Moon Creative Studios  |   Marshalltown
Julie  Rohrdanz creates worlds, real and imagined, with a camera and digital art.  Her creations evoke a range of emotions and realities. Each work is more than a moment, it's a gateway to another place or time.  Final products are in digital format and on canvas, metal, and paper prints. When she's not creating worlds and stories, she captures classic portraits of pets and people, nature, the sky, the night, and the spectra of light beyond our normal vision.  She works in studio, and outdoors, seeking to always expand her creativity. Julie's digital work isn't limited to work with photography but includes some design and illustration work as well. Beyond the lens and computer, she dabbles in other visual media such as painting and three dimensional art. Her love for art began in youth working with pencils and pastels.

Kayla McGehee |  Marshalltown
I've been making art of all kinds since I was a kid, and can thank the many wonderful art teachers in our community who taught me along the way.  My mediums include; watercolor, acrylic, ink, and wood burning. Most often my pieces are mixed media, blending 2 or more of those mediums together. My style and inspiration change from piece to piece,  but often reflect metaphysical or archetypical themes. My favorite artists include Monet, Pollock, Dali, Matisse, Kahlo, and Warhol.  This series, "Calling in Balance" depicts stylized, alchemical symbols of the Four Elements. And for me, has been a therapeutic outlet since the onset of the current 2020 Pandemic. These pieces are a product of my own inner reflection during this global pause. They serve as reminders that we are not separate from the natural world around us, and in this way we are never truly separate from each other. We're all made of the same stuff.

Kim Hanken  |  Kim Hanken Art  |  Marshalltown
Kim has had a paintbrush in her hand for most of her life.  As the years passed, evolution of herself and her art took shape. Her passions for both the Earth and the energy that fills it, awoke within her a new perspective on the importance of not only creating pieces of art but also for using it to speak from her soul on the things of deeper importance. The art she is creating today speaks of our planet and all that it provides on many levels. Earth is an amazing place that we are lucky to call home.  But while the resources on our beautiful planet are abundant, they are not endless.  There are so many things in our world to reuse, repurpose, and recycle, and when nature readies itself for the next season, it also provides an abundance of materials to reclaim.  All of the waste products and earth treasures used in her art were at the end of their life and chances are they would have been discarded and not thought of again.  Her art creates an awareness around bringing these things back to life; sometimes in a conventional way, other times very abstractly. Either way, these finds create texture and movement which provide a place for the paint to entangle itself, creating energy and new life.  Perhaps this is her small contribution to save Mother Earth, or perhaps it gives her comfort to increase awareness on how special our planet is.  Ultimately, it’s the satisfaction of unleashing the passion that resides deep inside of her. Every dip of her brush is inspired by what this earth places before her and every stroke comes directly from her soul to create an image for every viewer to experience.

Hallie Crouse  |  Gilman
My interest in art and drawing began at an early age. As I have grown my materials have changed and my style as well. My cardboard art involves one of my favorite mediums to work in. I really enjoy working with chalk pastels and the blending that can be accomplished with them. There are several works that are not chalk pastel but mixed media or watered down acrylics. One of the things that really keeps me motivated and inspired are my students. Being an art educator really gives you access to an energy that the youth have. I really feel as an artist I am blessed with the perfect marriage of my love to create and inspiring students to create too. The art room is my solace and the students are my greatest source of inspiration, and energy!

Nicholas Beard  |  Marshalltown
Beard’s love of art started early as he was attending Rogers Elementary in Marshalltown. His art education extended into high school, where the majority of his senior year was spent in the art room. Keeping his love of art always in his head and heart, Beard took some time off of his education and performed in a band. After a brief time performing, he registered at Marshalltown Community College where he was taught to think outside the box. "I don’t have to use pencil and paper to create. I can use anything. Art isn’t what is hanging on the wall … it’s you creating something.” After earning his AA Degree from MCC, Beard transferred to the University of Northern Iowa to finish a degree in education and continue taking as many art classes as he could. “UNI pushed my unorthodox type of art work, using space more than a canvas or paper. I enjoyed building things to make people think.” Beard would describe his style as detailed pen and ink and dividing space up until there is no space left. “If I’m drawing a parrot, you see the parrot but I’ve been focusing on this feather because I want to get every single little strand in there. It’s very meditative. I like getting lost in my work and not even knowing what’s going on.”

Paul Gregoire  |  Rhodes
Currently residing in central Iowa, Paul is a native of Michigan. He retired as Vice President, Global Human Resources for the Final Control Division of Emerson. A life-long artist, he works with acrylic and oil paints, creating “pop art” and “abstract” pieces, often employing a 3D approach. Music is a passion as can be seen in many of his paintings. Paul is also a luthier, and has been making custom guitars for the past 10 years. Working with his grandchildren on various art projects is one of his favorite past times!
"Philosophically, I see art in virtually everything I come in contact with. Be it a home in the woods, a custom guitar, the shore of a lake, or a sidewalk chalk masterpiece created by a 5 year old. Art is an escape for most of us- whether we know it or not- and can easily pull us away from troubling times even if for just a few minutes."

Seema Suthar |  Marshalltown
Seema fell in love with creating art when she was very young. She started painting and drawing everything she could, whenever she had the chance, and have continued doing so today. She loves trying new mediums and new paint challenges. She currently lives in Iowa with her husband and their two kids; a cat named Mowgli and a dog named Meera. She enjoys gardening and hiking when in her free time, when she's not painting. She am always looking for the next fun thing to paint on including windows, tree cuts, and most recently, motorcycles.

Shelli Finch  |  StressArt Studio  |  Marshalltown
"I'm an abstract artist.  I'm not a sentimentalist.  I have a passion for color, form and texture."
Shelli became a professional artist later in her life.  She started painting in 2001 after viewing self-taught artists on Ebay and thinking she could do just as well, if not better.  She has no formal training in art except a couple of Art History and Art Studio classes in college and a few studio courses at the Central Iowa Art Association and a couple of workshops in and around Iowa.  That being said, she knows what she likes when it comes to art – vibrant colors and highly textured surfaces are at the top of her list.  Two- and Three Dimensional art that conveys emotion through the use of color and texture is her favorite.  You’ll find influences of Willem de Kooning, Romare Bearden, Giacometti, and of course, Picasso in her work.  She formally opened her professional art business, StressArt Studio, in 2010.

Tawny Olson  |  Marshalltown
At the young age of 7 my mom, sister, and I moved from MN to IA. We ended up in Marshalltown due to my parents divorcing and my mother needed help getting back on her feet, so my grandparents stepped in. My family has always been supportive of my art and knew that I was very talented with an old soul. My current new favorite medium of art is digital painting on my iPad Pro 11 using the Adobe Sketch app. I love drawing portraits in black and grey and love the long tedious and detail work that goes into them.

Wade Judge  |  WRJ ARTS  |  Marshalltown
I was born and raised in central Iowa, hailing originally from Le Grand. After graduating high school, I then proceeded to complete my AA degree at MCC and then earning my BA in art education from the University of Northern Iowa. Once I graduated, I spent the next 7 years teaching in the desert Southwest in Yuma, Arizona. I returned to Marshalltown and began teaching at Marshalltown High School in 2012, where I teach photography, painting, drawing, pottery, and sculpture. In May of 2019, I completed my Masters in Art Education. At home, my wife Beth and I have 5 great kids: Aidan, Finley, Declan, Isla and Brenna. As far as my artwork goes, I really have enjoyed getting back into doing work for myself for a change, as this allows me a ton of freedom to work with color and shape, as well as allowing gravity to play a part of the end result. These pieces are created by layering different colors of paint and then moving the painting around to let the colors flow off of the canvas. I hope you enjoy my work.

Will Hildebrandt  |  LeGrand
Will attended Wartburg College receiving a BA in Art and Art Education in 1975. He received his MA in Painting from the University of Northern Iowa in 1979. Since then he has been an art instructor for over 30 years at all levels and continued to develop his own art throughout the years. He retired from teaching in 2008. His images have elements of mystery and the human condition. His subjects vary from a collapsing farm house, to the despair shared by many people around the world. A recurring theme in his art could be labeled "discards", or an empathetic view of the subjects upon which society has placed little value. My images have elements of mystery and the human condition. Nancy Adams  |  Marshalltown
Chicago native Nancy Jeanne Adams is a Professor of Psychology at Marshalltown Community College. She is also an assemblage artist, working primarily with dolls and miniatures, tho lately has found an affinity for large scale metal work.  Her first book, Transatlantic Bunny (2016), was inspired by a stuffed animal purchased when pregnant with her son Levi. After 20+ years, the book finally came to fruition. It was a true collaborative effort with illustrations by Ken Shuey from Connecticut and design layout by David Briggs of Marshalltown. Her second book, ‘The Golden Goose of Riverside’ (2018), is non-fiction, based on her pet goose, Goosey Goose and once again benefitted from the talents of Shuey and Briggs. She is currently working on another children’s book. Nancy lives in Marshalltown with her husband and childhood sweetheart, Jeff Braddock. Those interested in purchasing a book may contact Nancy directly at nanceab@partnercom.net or visit Riverside Cemetery, where both books are available.

WRITERS | DIRECTORS

Jude Rawlins |  Marshalltown
Jude Rawlins is a British-Irish filmmaker, musician, artist and writer based in New York and Iowa. He was born in Birmingham, England, in 1972. Musically he is perhaps best known as the lead singer, guitarist and principle songwriter of the band Subterraneans, which he formed in London in 1992 after the break up of his previous band Angelhead. He formed the Lene Lovich Band with the legendary New Wave singer in 2012, and toured as guitarist and manager with the band until 2019, when he decided to persue filmmaking full-time. As a filmmaker Jude conceived, shot and edited the much acclaimed experimental feature film Albion Rising in 2009, which starred the late Dudley Sutton as William Blake, and Hollywood and TV actress Juliet Landau as the poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox. His second feature length film was Songs of Alchemy, an adaptation of the opera based on the angelic conversations of Elizabeth I's astrologer and alchemist and John Dee. His 2016 short film The Divine Image won the Ken Russell award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was also a semi-finalist at the Los Angeles CineFest. In 2017 he began work on a radical adaptation of the Faust legend, and wrote the screenplay for Little Johnny Jewel set in Marshalltown, Iowa. Jude is about to start shooting secondary photography in Iowa for Little Johnny Jewel, which will reunite him with Juliet Landau, as well as working on Red, his long-gestating tribute to friend and mentor Derek Jarman, which stars Georgia Mackenzie and Julian Firth. He is also developing a second feature film set in Iowa in 1926, which will hopefully go into production once work on Little Johnny Jewel is completed. Jude is an alumni of Werner Herzog's Rogue Film School, and was sternly recommended to use Final Draft screenwriting software by Andrew Birkin. As a child he was the under-12s Hereford & Worcestershire county chess champion, and won his first art prize aged seven with a picture of the space station Skylab. His father is a keen playwright, poet and photographer, and gave Jude his first 35mm camera for his ninth birthday, a late 1960s Praktica SLR, which he still uses (see pic left). His mother was a professional seamstress in Dublin and London during the 60s, and made outfits for the artist Pauline Boty. Jude is married to writer, musician and pop culture critic Dahlia Schweitzer, with whom he frequently collaborates. Dahlia is professor of Film and Media Studies at New York State University's Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan.
